Hotel Review, Novotel Auckland Airport (Auckland, New Zealand)

The Novotel Auckland Airport is situated straight across the road from the International Terminal, quite literally across the road. As soon as you arrive at the hotel you can see in the hotels design that they have incorporated New Zealand’s culture and heritage throughout the building. The culture is on display throughout the hotel and right into your room, with everything having a symbolic meaning. The hotel offers 263 rooms, with 26 of these rooms interconnecting, perfect for those family getaways.
Check In and Arrival
As soon as you walk through the revolving door into the hotels lobby, the large floor to ceiling windows allow natural light to flow in, making for a bright, comfortable and welcoming first impression. As soon as you step foot in the hotel you are welcomed by the concierge at the door, who directs you to the check in counter. The Novotel Auckland Airport offers online check in to all guests. Two days prior to your arrival you will receive a message on your mobile device, all you have to do is simply follow the prompts. Online check in takes out the need to hand over all you details to the check in assistant at the desk when you arrive at the hotel. If you have completed online check in, all you need to do is make your way to the front desk and collect your room key.
If you don’t feel like checking in on your mobile device, you can still check in the “old fashioned” way. As I was staying at this hotel for part of my Birthday celebrations. I made a note on my booking, mentioning that I would be staying there for my birthday, not thinking of too much to come from it at the time.
Checking in was a simple straightforward process. As the check in attendant looked up my reservation in their system, she wished me a Happy Birthday and thanked me for staying at the hotel. She kindly upgraded my room to the Executive Level, included free breakfast for the first night, airport views and two complimentary drink vouchers to use at the hotels bar. The room that was assigned wasn’t ready at the time when I checked in. She took my suitcase and put it aside and directed me towards the bar. The check in attendant followed me over and had a quick chat to the bar attendant and organised a complimentary glass of sparkling wine for me. A glass of Lindauer Brut Cuvee was poured.
Unknown to me at the time, this was only the start of an amazing few nights of accommodation.
While I was sitting at the hotels bar, all of the staff passing by wished me a Happy Birthday. Within minutes of sitting at the bar, a slice of birthday cake came around, presented carefully with Happy Birthday written on the plate in chocolate. It was a lovely gesture by the hotel and really made for a great first impression and an amazing surprise.
As I devoured my slice of chocolate cake, they let me know that my room was ready. I had to collect my room key from the front desk. As I got to the front desk, the Guest Relations Manager, Jonathan was there and personally wished me a Happy Birthday and shook my hand. He also thanked me for choosing to stay at his hotel while I was celebrating my birthday, he gave me his card and offered that if there was anything else I needed to just give him a call. Jonathan assured me that I would love the room and its impressive view of Auckland Airport.
My bags were already sent up to the room. I was assigned room number 1115, on the 11th floor, the top level. As soon as I opened the hotel door I was blown away by how modern and stylish the room was and more importantly how good the view was. The room was perfectly prepared for my arrival, sitting on the beds were three elephants (not real elephants, although that would have been impressive). Thankfully, these elephants were only made out of towels.
Sitting on the desk was a handwritten birthday card, in which all the hotel staff had signed it and left a lovely message. In all my travels and hotel stays I have never had this level or personalisation before. – I was extremely impressed!
I was upgraded to an executive room, with two queen beds, a large work desk, complimentary tea and coffee and a fully stocked mini bar. One thing that I found to be a huge bonus in this room was just how accessible the power points were. There was no need to re-arrange the room, just to charge your phone. The bathroom was large and offered a bath with an overhead shower and a separate toilet, toiletries were also supplied. The only trouble I had with the bathroom was trying to get the plug to work effectively in the bath. It sounds simple, but I can assure you it wasn’t. It took two phone calls down to reception to explain how it worked and I ended up having to get one of the hotel staff to come up and do it for me. The shower does back onto the room, but thankfully the glass is heavily frosted, and you can also lower the motorized blind. Making sure that your privates, are kept private!
Most of the time I was distracted by the view from the room. The room offered large windows which overlooked the International Terminal and also the main runway at Auckland Airport. You can sit back and watch every plane take off, from the smallest Air New Zealand Dash 8, to the Emirates A380 superjumbos. – The perfect view for any AvGeek!
Soon after settling into my room, there was a knock on the door. The manager had sent up a bowl of fresh seasonal fruit, which was refreshed each day during housekeeping. There was also two bottles of complimentary water that was also refreshed daily.
A lot of people assume that airport hotels are going to be noisy places, and that all your going to hear is airport noise and the busy roadways below. Rest assured you won’t have to worry about that when staying at the Novotel Auckland Airport. All of the rooms offer full length, double glazed windows which block out all the noise from outside. Making for a peaceful and relaxing stay.
The beds are comfortable, and would have to be up there with one of the most comfortable hotel beds that I have slept in. Even though the hotel is listed as a four star property, it has all the inclusions of a five star hotel, without the five star price tag. The hotel offers a luxurious pillow menu and luxurious textiles.
Breakfast is served every morning from 5am in the hotels restaurant, The Square Restaurant. The restaurant offers a full buffet breakfast, there is sure to be something for everyone, and you won’t leave feeling hungry. The hot food selection offers freshly cooked eggs, as well as scrambled eggs, sauteed mushrooms, baked beans, bacon and sausages.
There is also a selection of fresh fruit, yoghurt, muesli, stewed pears and a small selection of cold meats. Around to the side there is an impressive offering of pastries, muffins, cereals, a selection of breads and croissants. along with many more offerings. – There is literally way too much to mention!
The hotel also offers Lunch and Dinner in their restaurant, there is a huge vertical garden that sits above the bar that is filled with many ferns and indoor plants, the perfect place to relax and have a few drinks. Lunch is served in The Square Restaurant form 11am to 3pm, with dinner service following on from 6pm to 10pm.
Being so close to the airport it makes it easy to access multiple car hire options and also gives you the ability to catch the SkyBus, taking you right into the heart of the Auckland CBD in under 50 minutes, making for an easy way to to explore the city. If you do choose to hire a car and are looking at parking at the hotel, please be aware that the hotel gives you two parking options, either Self Parking or Valet Parking. Just be aware that Self Parking is the cheaper option, but doesn’t allow for in and out access which is disappointing, if your just dropping into the hotel between trips.
The Novotel Auckland Airport is an excellent choice for accommodation when travelling to Auckland, New Zealand. The location of the hotel is excellent! Even though it is at the airport, it’s a great option as saves you having to drag your bags around to an inner city hotel. I can’t thank the staff enough for how special they made my two nights of accommodation and made the whole holiday a memorable one. I couldn’t have thought of a better way to spend my birthday.
Jonathan, the Guest Relations Manager is a huge asset to this hotel, along with his staff make this hotel a great one, and one that I will be sure to visit again!
A Few Friendly Tips…
- Ask for a room which has a high floor.
- Don’t be afraid to specify when booking if you would rather a particular view. The airport view would be my recommendation.
- If your unsure of things to do in and around Auckland, head down to the concierge and they will have heaps of ideas of things you can do.
