Through the airlines efforts, along with OzHarvest, Virgin Australia are proud to announce that they have provided over one million meals to children in need around Australia.
OzHarvest is one of Australia’s leading food rescue organisations, collecting surplus food from commercial companies and delivering it directly to more than 1,000 charities, supporting those people in need across Australia. The company was founded in 2004, and has been growing strength by strength every year. Virgin Australia started their partnership with OzHarvest in 2015, only three years ago. In those three years OzHarvest has collected over 333,000 kilograms of food and saved it going to landfill. Virgin Australia mentioned that they are one of OzHarvest biggest food donors, outside of the major supermarket chains, demonstrating an innovation in the way that the airline operates and deals with its excess of food on a daily basis.
Rob Wood, Virgin Australia General Manager of Group Sustainability said “the partnership demonstrates Virgin Australia’s commitment to implementing sustainable business operations”.
“It’s fantastic when our airlines is a able to address the pressing issue of hunger and poverty in our community whilst also improving the way that our business operates and reducing our waste streams”.
With Virgin Australia’s food donation of over eight tones every month it provides 16,000 meals to those people in need. With 1 out of 5 children experiencing food insecurity each year.
“We commend the efforts of our crew, our catering partners at Gate Gourmet, the volunteers, the drivers at OzHarvest and the many others involved in this supply chain that go the extra mile to ensure that surplus food is passed on with care every single day” Mr. Wood added.
OzHarvest Founder and CEO, Ronni Kahn, said that “OzHarvest looks forward to continuing to progress its partnership with Virgin Australia to help those most in need in the community”.
“Food rescue is at the heart of what we do. We know that kids who eat a good breakfast and have access to fresh nutritious food, can concentrate at school. Thanks to the regular donations from Virgin Australia, we can provide a range of nourishing food items including fresh fruit, sandwiches and wraps, cheese and biscuits, muffins, muesli bars and drinks”. she said.
Around Australia OzHarvest currently saves over 125 tonnes of fresh food every week from over 3,000 generous food donors. This food is then delivered to 1,300 charitable agencies, that then pass the food on to those people in need.
