Fiji Airways is the first airline carrier to join the newly implemented oneworld Connect platform. This new platform links up to the oneworld alliance, enabling more customers to enjoy exclusive services and benefits across an extensive global network.
oneworld was created 20 years ago and this has been the first new membership platform that has been made available for airlines to join.
For an airline to join this new platform they need to have minimum of three oneworld members as it sponsors, for Fiji Airways they were sponsored by four airlines Qantas, American Airlines, British Airways and Cathay Pacific, with the Australian carrier Qantas mentoring Fiji Airways through their implementation process. The Fiji base carrier has been a proud codeshare partner with Qantas operating many flights under a QF flight number and sharing some rhetorical between the two carriers. British Airways, one of the main airlines that founded oneworld is in discussion with Fiji Airways for potential bi-lateral cooperation.
Oneworld connect partners, such as Fiji Airways will provide benefits to its frequent flyers numbers including the oneworld tiers such as Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald when travelling on their flights, with of course a greater range of benefits offered with their main oneworld sponsors.
Those customers travelling which hold oneworld status Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby, equivalent to Qantas Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum One tiers, they will be able to use the priority check-in desks when available, with those higher more elite status holders, Emerald and Sapphire members getting access to priority boarding.
Additional benefits that are passed onto its oneworld customers are below:
- Through check-in of passengers and their baggage to their final destination, as long as you’re traveling on a oneworld alliance carrier or oneworld carriers codeshare flights.
- The ability to earn and redeem frequent flyer rewards, as well as earning airline status credits for eligible flights (for customers from oneworld connect airline, these benefits depend on the oneworld connect partner, offering a frequent flyer program)
- Access to lounges at key airports for First and Business class passengers as well as the eligible oneworld status holders, oneworld emerald and oneworld sapphire.
“In the 20 years since oneworld’s conception in 1998, global airline alliances have expanded their breadth to the extent that they now account for 60 per cent of total industry revenues and capacity globally, and 70 per cent of revenues between the world’s top 125 business city airports. Said Pekka Vauramo, oneworld Governing Board Chairman and Finnair CEO.
“oneworld connect enables us to bring together more airlines to complement the alliance’s global leaders, so customers can earn rewards and feel recognised while travelling even further. “Mr. Vauramo added.
Many of Fiji Airways sponsors had great comments to make in regard to the new alliance scheme.
Fiji Airways CEO Andre Viljoen said “Fiji Airways is thrilled and honoured to be the first oneworld connect partner globally. We are delighted to link Fiji, and the South Pacific to the world’s premier airline alliance and deepening our relationships in particular with Qantas, American Airlines, British Airways and Cathay Pacific.”
